If you plan on building many SPAD slopers (and why shouldn't you?!), then building yourself a wing jig is an absolute MUST. A wing jig is a simple device that helps hold the wing leading edge down flat and also anchors the wing material to the work area so that you can easily glue various parts together. The result of using a wing jig is a perfect wing every time. In addition, a wing jig makes a very nice surface to build your wing on. With a generous 3' x 4' working space, you can anchor the wing down and do your spar gluing (before folding the wing over) too. Here is my design (this is one I built for a friend, and I had clamped it so the liquid nails would dry overnight): Here is a shot of the 4' 2x3 showing the 45 degree angle cut: Simply glue the 2x3 to the particle board using liquid nails. Clamp overnight and you now have a wing jig. Here is a shot of a wing in the jig: Notice how the leading edge is held perfectly straight and all you have to do is run your glue down the top of the yardstick spar, and then use another 2x4 (not shown in picture) to press the entire top half of the wing down onto the spar. Since I use hot glue, I merely hold the 2x4 (not shown) onto the top of the wing and wait 1 or 2 minutes for the glue to cool. Here is another design: |
